The Department of Microbiology at the College of Medicine, University of Karbala, held a training course entitled “The Role of Fecal Calprotectin in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases”
The course aimed to introduce participants to the role of fecal calprotectin in diagnosing inflammatory bowel diseases and determining the subsequent diagnostic steps and the need to resort to endoscopy as well as evaluating the response to treatment in addition to a practical study of different cases of high levels such as the presence of a bacterial infection or inflammation of a specific part of the digestive system such as the colon and duodenum.
The course included an explanation and definition of the importance of calprotectin (a protein associated with calcium and zinc and found in white blood cells and largely in neutrophils and secreted from them in the event of inflammation) in intestinal infections of various causes and its prominent role in diagnosis and follow-up. It also included talking about recent studies in this regard, as well as modern practical methods for conducting this analysis to benefit from it as an indicator of inflammatory bowel diseases.
