The College of Medicine at the University of Karbala held a training course titled “Emerging and Re-emerging Viral Diseases.” The course aimed to spread health awareness among community members due to the emergence of previously unobserved viruses or new strains of identified viruses, influenced by variables contributing to the emergence or re-emergence of viruses.
The course included the concept of Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) as diseases caused by pathogens not previously observed within a population or geographic location. Viruses are a primary cause of EIDs, especially ssRNA viruses, which account for the majority of diseases. The course also covered various epidemics that have spread over the years in different countries, including hemorrhagic fever viruses, Hanta, Nipah, Zika, and others.
