A Master’s thesis at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Karbala, for the branch of Biological and Clinical Chemistry by student Haider Muhammad Hussein Nasrallah, titled (Interleukin-18 and polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha gene with other biochemical indicators as risk factors for kidney injuries as a result of exposure to imaging materials) in clinical chemistry.
The study included nephropathy caused by misleading imaging, an important complication of vascular imaging procedures resulting from injection of contrast media, as it is considered the third common cause of hospital-acquired acute renal failure, which represents about 12% of cases.
This thesis aimed to investigate the effect of the therapeutic coronary angiography primer on the serum levels of tumor alpha necrosis factor, and to investigate the role of the genotypes of each of the interleukin-18 genotypes as prognostic markers for angiography-induced nephropathy after percutaneous coronary intervention.
The study concluded that the rise in interleukin-18 after arterial interventions is a major factor behind acute kidney injury caused by contrast media for ocular imaging, and the gene polymorphism (RS1946518) of interleukin-18 is associated with risk of nephropathy after percutaneous coronary intervention.
The committee recommended granting the student, Haider Muhammad Nasrallah, a master’s degree with distinction in clinical chemistry, which consisted of the chairmanship and membership of both
