The College of Medicine at Karbala University organized an educational and awareness seminar on the psychological and social dimensions of violence against women. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls marks the beginning of a 16-day campaign against violence, starting on November 25 and ending on December 10.
The 2024 campaign, themed “Every 10 Minutes a Woman is Killed,” aims to draw attention to the alarming rise in violence against women, revive commitments, and call for accountability and action by decision-makers to reduce this phenomenon and address its psychological and social consequences.
The seminar aimed to study the causes and motivations of violence and its psychological and social consequences.
The seminar discussed the phenomenon of violence against women, which has become a global issue affecting all societies, including the Arab community. The rate of violence against women in the region has increased in recent years due to security instability and conflicts in several countries.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Rafah Mahdi Al-Hakim (Head of the Family Guidance and Counseling Authority at the Holy Abbasid Shrine) and Ms. Wiam Ali Amin from the College of Medicine at Karbala University.
The seminar targeted female faculty members, staff, and students at the college.
Wiam Ali stated: “Based on the above, Islam has opposed violence against women for 1400 years and continues to do so. God has honored women, elevated their status, and granted them their rights in the most complete and wise manner. The status of women in Islamic society surpasses the progress and development achieved in advanced countries today.”
