Iraq and Iran Launch Science Week in Karbala

Karbala, Iraq – Over 100 universities from Iraq and Iran came together in Karbala to launch the Iraq-Iran Science Week. The event, which aims to strengthen academic and scientific cooperation between the two nations, was marked by the signing of an executive program between the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and its Iranian counterpart.  

In his opening speech, Iraqi Higher Education Minister Dr. Naeem al-Abboud highlighted the significance of the second edition of the Science Week. He emphasized the program’s focus on faculty and researcher exchange, joint research projects, cultural exchange, scholarships, specialized workshops, and the establishment of joint science and technology parks.

Iranian Minister of Science, Research, and Technology Dr. Hussein Simaei expressed gratitude for the high level of organization of the joint Science Week and underscored the importance of scientific cooperation between the universities of both countries to enhance their global rankings.  

The signed executive program outlines several areas of cooperation, including:

  • Scholarships: A joint scholarship program for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, particularly under the “Study in Iraq” program.
  • Workshops: Organizing training workshops for faculty and students.
  • Joint supervision: Encouraging joint supervision of research.
  • Faculty exchange: Facilitating the exchange of university professors for joint research and lectures.  
  • Science park: Establishing a joint science park in Iraq under the management of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The opening ceremony featured official speeches, scientific presentations, and the honoring of several distinguished individuals.
