Karbala Medicine thesis discusses the role of c4d tissue immune expression in soluble nephritis

The Iraqi Board of Pathology at Karbala University College of Medicine discussed the role of c4d expression in soluble nephritis. The thesis submitted by the researcher (Ghadeer Saleh Noah) was titled “c4d expression in soluble nephritis and its association with pathologic and clinical outcomes”.

The discussion committee consisted of

The study aimed to investigate C4d immunohistochemical expression in lupus nephritis, the importance of its detection in different categories of the disease and its correlation with clinical outcomes.

The study found that fourteen (40%) patients showed a response to C4d expression and no response was recorded in twenty-one (60%) patients and urine albumin was higher in C4d-positive cases (P=0.001). There was no correlation between C4d staining and lupus nephritis categories (P<0.05) but a statistically significant correlation was found with Anti-dsDNA concentration (P=0.048) and no correlation was detected between low levels of complement factors and C4d positivity. The study also found that C4d expression in renal glomeruli was positively correlated with severe proteinuria and with increased concentration of Anti-dsDNA antibodies, which are parameters of lupus nephritis activity. These data suggest that C4d staining may help identify a group of patients with a worse prognosis of the disease, providing insights into therapeutic approaches for SLE with lupus nephritis.
